Children And Childhood Of Classical Athens By Mark Golden...
In his book, Children and Childhood in Classical Athens, Mark Golden discusses how the ancient Athenians viewed children, the role of children in the community and the household, and childrenââ¬â¢s relationships with others. In an excerpt from the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle concludes that parents love their children more than children love their parents. Amongst other things, Golden argues that parents loved their children despite high infant mortality rates, sons had obligations to their parents, and siblings were ideally close to one another. Goldenââ¬â¢s work illuminates the depth of the parental and filial love that Aristotle refers to. In this excerpt from the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle claims that parents love their children as a part of themselves while children love their parents as the source of their being and he differentiates between these two loves to argue that a parentââ¬â¢s love is greater than a childââ¬â¢s. Aristotle first discusses parents, sayin g, ââ¬Å"parents know their offspring with more certainty than children know their parentage; and a progenitor is more attached to progeny than progeny to progenitor, since that which springs from a thing belongs to the thing from which it springs.â⬠This statement sounds technical, logical, and rather cold, downplaying the emotional aspect of affection. Aristotle is attempting to objectively explain the cause of love between parent and child.
